To be very clear, this track is about self sabotage, and not anything to do with a sinister, literal interpretation of the lyrics. The roles in the song play a familiar protagonist, the things we hold dear to ourselves, and the sometimes ill-perceived way that justification can manifest to rationalize our thoughts and actions, or how external support can appear. It is a track to raise awareness of our own thought processes, and extend for help, albeit if reluctance is strong.

Go run and hide your children
Stow them away in the ceiling
Then race down to the front door

Don’t be surprised by what can sabotage an instinct of protection
From the menace that is waiting patiently outside the door

Paint the lights out and draw all the curtains
Check that every latch is locked for certain
The scratching on windows burns the ears
The rattling handle sends their fears away

With a quick glimpse of familiar eyes
Reflected in the kitchen knife
Spoken with a calm inflection

Don’t be surprised by what can sabotage an instinct of protection

And with both hands, pulls them closer
Until we find out that the menace that was waiting outside
wasn’t the killer after all
